“Queen of the Savages” by the Magnetic Fields
This has nothing to do with Azerbaijan.
I was thinking about this song and how it reminded me of one of the stories in Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried. The story is “Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong.” In the story, a young woman from the Midwest comes to visit her fiance in Vietnam and ends up wearing a necklace of tongues. In the song, the eponymous character “…eats other queens/she’s very religious/she doesn’t use a fork/I don’t think I’ll go back to New York.” Maybe because I’m going back to New York (for a visit) in a month? I don’t know.
